Derrel Schoonover, age 91, passed away Friday, May 12, 2023, at Grace Care Center in Olney, Texas. Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 20, 2023, in the Chapel of Lunn Funeral Home in Olney with Scotte Clark, officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Lunn Funeral Home of Olney.
Derrel was born on July 27, 1931, in Burlingame, Kansas to the late Daniel L. Schoonover and Ethel (Black) Schoonover. He served in the United States Navy aboard the U.S.S. Cotton (DD-669) during the Korean War and received numerous medals including the Good Conduct Medal, Korean Service Medal, United Nations Medal, Navy Occupation (European Clasp) and the National Defense Service Medal. He married Mary Helen "Sam" Stewart on May 10, 1969, in Boulder, Colorado. They moved to Olney in 1970. Derrel was a member of the Hamilton Street Church of Christ. Derrel was a retired police officer after 17 years of service. He was also a former Deputy Sheriff with Young County, served as Fire Marshall and was a faithful volunteer fireman for 22 years.
Derrel was preceded in death by his parents; five sisters: Mary Schoonover, Myrtle Schoonover, Helen Northrup, Louetta Ball, Letha Bolton; five brothers: Robert Dale Schoonover, Clifford Schoonover, Vernon Schoonover, Delbert Schoonover, Henry Schoonover; a son, Tom Schoonover; and a grandson, Antonio Melchor, Jr.
Derrel is survived by his wife, Mary Helen "Sam" Schoonover of Olney, Texas; one son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Jo Schoonover of Wylie, Texas; two daughters and one son-in-law: Julie Melchor of San Antonio, Texas; Cathy and Jeff Healey of Wichita Falls, Texas; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
