L. L. "Cotton" Wainwright, age 89, died Friday, March 27, 2015, in Olney, Texas. Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, March 30, 2015 in the chapel of Lunn Funeral Home in Olney, Texas with Scotte Clark of Olney, officiating. Interment will follow at Restland Cemetery in Olney, Texas with full military honors presented by the American Volunteer Reserves of Young County. Arrangements are under the direction of Lunn Funeral Home of Olney.
"Cotton" was born on April 3, 1925 in Newcastle, Texas to the late William Carl and Willie Ida (Leberman) Wainwright. He served his country proudly in the United States Merchant Marines during World War II where he was trained and licensed as a Third Assistant Engineer of vessels. He then joined the United States Army and served courageously during the Korean War. While stationed at Gifu, Honshu, Japan, he completed 140 hours of course of instruction for unit chemical defense in the Far East Command Chemical School. While stationed at Fort Benning, Georgia, he completed the Basic Airborne Course and was qualified as a parachutist. He also completed Ranger training at the Army Infantry School and served in the 10th Ranger Company. "Cotton" was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds he received on June 10, 1952, in a two-hour battle in the Red uprising at Koje Island. After his honorable discharge, "Cotton" was employed as production superintendent for Mobil Oil Corporation in Libya, North Africa. His production camp was in the desert about 350 miles from Tripoli, where he resided while not working in the camp. He married the former Edna Haney. She preceded him in death on November 3, 2009. He was a faithful member of the Downtown Men's Bible Class. He was also a member of the First Christian Church in Olney.
"Cotton" was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and two sisters: Billie Ann Schwedes and Doris Morgan. He is survived by his three brothers: Richard Wainwright of Spring, Texas, Don Wainwright and John Wainwright both of Olney, Texas; two sisters: Carla Perry and husband L. F. of Olney, Texas and Bette Biter of Richardson, Texas; niece, Holly Martin of Waco, Texas; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
