Margriette Barnett Mitchell was born to Amanda Sims Barnett and Wiley Barnett in Caddo, Texas on May 21, 1920. She was the youngest of nine children. She moved to Olney as an infant and lived her life there except for the last five months in a care facility in Dallas. She passed from this life on April 29, 2011.
Margriette and Loy L. Mitchell were married in Archer City in February 1938. He died April 1979. She was also preceded in death by her son Donald A. Sandy Mitchell in February 1985. A granddaughter, Lynlee Mitchell Mullins, also predeceased her in April 2011.
Margriette Magie Mitchell was a mother extraordinaire, a homemaker, and a businesswoman. Her proudest accomplishments were her family and her warm, well kept home. Her first business venture, MM Flowers was opened adjoining her home in partnership with her sister-in-law, Mary Mitchell Thompson in the 1940s. She subsequently became a licensed beautician, owning and operating MM Beauty Shop. Her later endeavors included creating distinctive ceramic artwork and teaching others the skill, operating a second Olney flower shop Olney Floral and Ceramic, and eventually opening a framing studio in her home.
Magie was a talented painter specializing in oils. Her interest was western art and country scenes. She also painted lifelike portraits of three of her grandchildren. Many of her paintings can be seen in Olney homes and elsewhere.
Magie was a supportive partner over forty years with her husband as he developed successful businesses in wholesale petroleum products, Gulf service stations in Young and Archer Counties, farming and in oil production. Magie and Loy were active in church and community affairs in Olney. They were especially grateful to Reverend Dr. Cort R. Flint. During his tenure in Olney, he led them to a belief in Jesus Christ and baptized them and their sons at First Baptist Church during the 1940s.
Magie took particular pride in her active PTA involvement and other support of her two sons as they grew up in Olney. She was also active in the Order of Eastern Star, the Sorosis Club, and the Hamilton Hospital Auxiliary.
Mrs. Mitchell is survived by a son, Ronald L. Mitchell and his wife Virginia of Dallas; by four grandchildren and by five great grandchildren. A niece, Terri Wipperman of Olney and two former daughters-in-law also survive her: Helen Albritton of Corsicana and Gwen Manning of Levelland.
