Obituary

Melvin Lee Kirk, age 79 of Granbury, Texas, passed away Saturday, August 12, 2023, at Heritage House of Keller. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, August 19, 2023, in the Chapel of Lunn Funeral Home in Olney, Texas with Rev. Jerry Blake, officiating. Interment will follow in Newcastle Cemetery in Newcastle, Texas. Arrangements are under the direction of Lunn Funeral Home.

Mel was born on September 28, 1943, in Groom, Texas to the late Thomas George Kirk and Bessie (Inmon) Kirk. He married Joaquina Lynn Schultz on May 22, 1964, in Amarillo, Texas. She preceded him in death on December 2, 2011. He retired from the oil and gas industry as a directional driller. Along with his wife, they raised Fantail and Norwich Cropper pigeons for 20 years and he was a member of the National Pigeon Association for 15 years. Mel loved fishing and as a Pro-Angler, with his wife by his side, they fished in many bass tournaments for over 25 years. He also enjoyed playing golf for 35 + years, especially in Texas and Arizona.

Mel was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; two sisters: Anacathrine Hamilton and Lillian Blankenship; two brothers: Charles Kirk and Donald Kirk; two nephews: Charles (Butch) Blankenship and Dennis Blankenship; two nieces: Tammy Kirk Grimes and Pamela Kirk; and his step-daughter, Kimberly Fleck.

Mel is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Betsy and Bryan Pokluda of Keller, Texas; his grandson, Brian Lee Pokluda of Keller, Texas; his granddaughter, Brooke Pokluda of Keller, Texas; his stepdaughter, Twyla Tibbertsma and her husband Ritske Tibbertsma, Sr. of Canyon Lake, Texas; his stepdaughter, Kristina Wood of Canyon Lake, Texas; his step-grandson, Ritske Tibbertsma, Jr. and his wife Patricia Tibbertsma and their five children of Nacogdoches, Texas; his step-grandson, Cees Tibbertsma of La Marque, Texas; his step-grandson, Devin Wood of Titusville, Florida; and his niece, Dawn Stowe of Lufkin, Texas.
