Obituary

We are saddened to announce the passing of our mother Norma LaVerne Mahan. Among friends and family, she was known as LaVerne or Burn and affectionately as Granny Burn or Mom. Norma LaVerne McCain Mahan has gained her place among the angels in Heaven. Granny Burn was born October 20, 1925, and passed from this life on February 10, 2023. She lived 97 years, 3 months and 21 days. She was born in Booneville, Texas, to her parents Howard and Jessica McCain, both deceased. Her family soon moved to Olney, Texas, where Granny Burn went through school and graduated from Olney High School at age 16. She had 3 siblings, brother J.D. McCain, and sisters Billie McCain Bowden and Betty McCain Sheppard, all previously deceased. In 1945 she renewed a high school acquaintance and married L.D. (Duke) Mahan in 1947, also deceased in 1994. They resided in Kermit, Texas, from 1947-1961 when they moved to Garden City, Kansas, living there until dad's retirement from Gulf Oil Company in 1983. They then moved to Sherman, Texas, and mom continued to live there until 2014 when she moved to Athens, Texas, to an assisted living facility.

They had two sons, Garry Mahan and wife Pam of Haleyville, Alabama, and David Mahan and wife Cheri of Athens, Texas. She leaves 7 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and a host of nephews, nieces, friends and other loved ones.

Granny Burn loved God, family and Country and devoted her life to those ideals. She was always an active worker in her church, and the Bible was as much a part of our childhood education as any schoolbook. Her husband, children and grandchildren were her wards, and she took exceptional care of all. Her Country was always dear and close to her heart and patriotism was foremost in her heart and actions, never tolerant of anyone that would desecrate Country or flag.

Granny Burn's seat at the table is empty now, but she stands straight and tall before the King of Kings and Lord of Lords with no more pain and suffering that she has endured for so long. We love you and miss you, Granny Burn...Mom! It's never goodbye, but we'll see you later!

Funeral services will be held in Olney, Texas, at Lunn Funeral Home at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, February 17, 2023, with her sons Garry and David presiding. Burial will be in Restland Cemetery in Olney following services where she will be buried at her husband's side. Her nephews Dan Sheppard and Scott Sheppard will preside at graveside services.
