Perry C. Kunkel

Perry C Kunkel, age 68, passed away on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, at Hospice of Wichita Falls.

Perry was born on November 2, 1957, in Olney, Texas, to the late Oscar and Helene Bernhardt Kunkel. A lifelong resident of Olney, he loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting, shooting, and sharing a joke or two.

Perry started as a truck driver like his dad. He decided to try welding and loved creating stuff out of metal and steel, which led to making smokers and cooking. He worked at the Texas Department of Transportation for 38 years and was quite famous for his brisket cooking and cartoon drawings there.

Perry was brought up to love and serve his Lord and made sure his children knew Jesus as their Lord and Savior by teaching Sunday school and Midweek school.

Perry was a Boy Scout leader for several years and loved taking the boys on hikes and camping out. His greatest joy was when his son, Jarrett, and several others obtained the rank of Eagle Scout.

Perry supported Emily in her 4-H projects and her 4-H animals.

There will be no service per Perry’s request, and in lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Hospice of Wichita Falls in his memory, 4909 Johnson Road, Wichita Falls, Texas 76310, or to the Boy Scout account at InterBank for the rebuild of the scout hut.

Perry was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Helene Kunkel, and brother, Ronald M. Kunkel.

Perry is survived by his son, Jarrett Kunkel and wife Danah of Wichita Falls, Texas; his daughter, Emily Kunkel Purtell of Olney, Texas; his 3 grandchildren, SeVayne and Ashlyn Kunkel of Wichita Falls, Texas, and Emerson Purtell of Olney, Texas; and the mother of his children, Dianna Kunkel of Olney, Texas
