Obituary
Robert M. Harmel died February 27, 2013, at Seven Oaks Nursing Home in Olney. Graveside services will be Friday, March 1, 2013 at 11:00 am at the Megargel, Texas, Cemetery under the direction of Lunn's Funeral Home of Olney, Texas. David Carpenter, Minister of Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Olney, will officiate, assisted by Dan Winningham.
On October 8, 1915, Robert was born in Megargel, Texas. He and Norma Richards were married October 6, 1935, in Megargel, where they made their home until moving to Olney in 1971. Robert was a farmer & rancher all of his adult life and remained active into his mid-90s and beyond by "making his rounds" to check on the cattle, wheat, grass, stock tanks, and how much it had rained. He loved and was an excellent steward of the family's land.
Robert was preceded in death by his wife, Norma Richards Harmel, who left this life September 20, 1991, and his oldest daughter, Brenda "Sis" Shawver, who left this life August 10, 2011. He is survived by his youngest daughter, Jo Helen Wilson and husband Nick; his son, Dr. Bob Harmel and wife Dr. Sarah Kramer Harmel; his granddaughter and Sis's daughter, Joy Shawver Ball and husband David; and his grandson and Sis's son, Carey Shawver and wife, Sue. He is also survived by his granddaughter, Elizabeth Wilson Parker and husband Dr. George Parker; his grandsons Dr. Daren Harmel and wife, Karomy; and Jeremy Harmel and wife, Cori; his great-grandchildren, Lily Parker, Abby Parker, Sloan Harmel, Bannock Harmel, Landry Harmel, Sydney Harmel, Jonathan Ball, Robby Shawver and wife, Jamie, Katy Shawver Wilde and husband, Michael, Jill Shawver and fiancé, Chance McCauley; and his great-great grandchildren Garrett Wilde and Clara Shawver.
Pallbearers are Daren Harmel, Jeremy Harmel, Carey Shawver, Robby Shawver, Chris Harmel, and Craig Harmel. For those desiring, the family requests memorials be made to the Megargel Cemetery Association, P.O. Box 265, Megargel, TX 76370.
Visitation for family and friends will be at Lunn's Funeral Home in Olney from 6:30-7:30 pm Thursday and after the graveside service at the Megargel Cemetery on Friday.
