Obituary

William Sherrill Burba, 87, died June 4, 2012, peacefully at home in Olney, Texas. Burba was born November 7, 1924, in Whitesboro Texas. Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m., Friday, June 8, 2012, at the Chapel of Lunn Funeral Home in Olney, Texas with the Rev. David Carpenter officiating. Burial will follow at Restland Cemetery in Olney. Burba was the fourth child of Ralph Coy and Denver Nevada Burba. He got his first job at six years old running milk bottles to porches from the back of a horsedrawn wagon. As a young boy with a pony, he participated in one of the last cattle drives in Whitesboro, Texas, and was paid 1 for keeping the cattle out of flower beds as they went through town. Burba graduated from Whitesboro High School then reported for military duty in December, 1943, and served as a B24 tail gunner in the 828th Bomb Squadron, 485th Bomb Group Heavy and the 15th Air Corp. After WWII, Sherrill attended NTSU earning a Bachelor of Business degree. After college and first moving to Olney he worked for the Lunn Funeral Home and the Lunn Furniture store, before starting his 33 year career as Business Manager for the LovettMeredith Clinic. He held many other positions during his professional career including: administrator of the MissouriKansasTexas Railroad Hospital, Medical Group Management Association, NorTex Regional Planning Commission and TriRegion Health Systems Agency. He was appointed by Gov. Bill Clements to serve on a statewide Drug Advisory Board and he served on a House Select Committee and drug and alcohol abuse and organized crime. Gov. Dolph Briscoe appointed him to the Midwestern State University Board of Regents and he served multiple terms, including one term as President. He was an elder of the Olney Cumberland Presbyterian Church as well as the church bookkeeper for 16 years. He was elected to two terms on the Olney City Council, and one term as Mayor. Sherrill was married to Joan Tulley for 34 years. Burba is survived by his sister Palmer Logan of Wichita Falls, Texas, his four children: Jo Lourill Dahl and husband Steven of Juneau, Alaska, Adele Mooney of Maypearl Texas, Teresa Clerihew and husband David of Olney, Texas, Bill Burba and wife Chylene of Childress, Texas. After Joans death in 1984 he married Geraldine Price and lived in Dallas until her death in 2007. He is survived by stepdaughters Sherri Kowalski and husband Robert, Robin Price all of Dallas, Texas. He is survived by 11 grandchildren, Rachael Dahl, Jessica Mooney, Matt Burba, Brandon Burba, Cecily Clerihew, John Clerihew, Robert Kowalski, Jr., Ashley Kowalski, Chris Clerihew, Shannon Eaton, 2 step great granddaughters, Jaci and Jenna Eaton, many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

Visitation will be Thursday, June 7, 2012 from 68 pm at the funeral home.
